a unique dining and social environment, in the heart of Adams Morgan

About The Reef

Welcome to The Reef. We are a local, neighborhood haunt located in the heart of happening Adams Morgan. We specialize in unique and interesting beers and we're more than happy to tell you all about them and let you sample a few too. Our kitchen keeps it real by cooking up some fantastic dishes with only the highest quality organic produce and free-range meats all provided by local farmers.

You can always find a place to sit and a little serenity on our main level. The music isn't too loud and by the soft light of the aquariums you'll find the fishies are always chill.

For the more adventurous, check out our jungle-themed Lush bar. A little darker, a little more intimate and infused with the pulse and energy of the street.

And for the outdoors type, the Roof is always waiting for you, weather permitting, that is. You like a little light rain? Let us know, sometimes we do too...

Our Mission Statement: Free-range - Organic - Sustainable

At the Reef...

...we plan our menus with a few principles: organically-grown seasonal vegetables, free-range poultry and meats, fair-catch seafood, honest flavors and satisfying meals at fair prices.

ORGANIC PRODUCE
We serve real, unforced vegetables and fruits of the season, grown without toxic pesticides and fertilizers; the flavor is noticably better and it's all-around kinder to the environment. Buying organic encourages more organic farming, so maybe it will be easier for your own market to stock better produce. It's healthier, too.

FREE RANGE MEATS AND POULTRY
Big agribusiness corporations have changed meat. Crowded feedlot animals are kept in dirty, frightening and painful conditions. They're full of growth steroids, hormones and just-in-case antibiotics. Packing plant leavings are fed to the next batch of animals in the feedlot. "Production line" animals can't develop their muscles - or flavor. We buy healthy, well-treated animals that live naturally on real grasslands, herded by ranchers who raise them in a respectful manner. Their waste is properly recovered, and the food they eat is grown in an environmentally safe way. You'll taste the difference.

SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE
We would enjoy cooking familiar favorites like Atlantic cod and swordfish, but overfishing has virtually wiped out those species. Drag, gill and seine nets haul in more than five pounds of dead by-catch for every pound of seafood that reaches the market. Most fish farms pollute the local ecosystem with overfeeding and fish waste disposal. Short-sighted aqua business is destroying species ecosystems in the most beautiful and fruitful bodies of water on the earth. We buy only certified sustainable seafood - fish and shellfish that aren't endangered, that are caught with responsible methods or farmed without harm to local balances. Even the colorful fish in our fish tanks are raised or captured in a way that hasn't damaged the waters from which they came.

HONEST FLAVORS, HONEST ORIGINS
The diversity of immigrants to the United States has blessed us with many exciting regional and ethnic cuisines. But the Melting Pot also gave us chop suey and processed cheese. Throwing together foods and techniques willy-nilly dilutes their flavors and masks the ingredients. "Fusion cuisine" mongrelizes food character. At The Reef we see food as history, a celebration of family and heritage cooking skills. Our food will be simple and honest, but never dull.

VALUES
We serve exceptional food and beverages with taste and style at a fair price. Good portions, satisfying meals, pleasant and attentive service.

If you have any suggestions, tell us about them.
All of us at The Reef welcome Washington to our family table.
